💡Know Before You Go: Philippines Travel Tips & FAQs
Before you pack your bags, here are the most essential travel tips and frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your trip to the Philippines. From local customs and safety reminders to packing must-haves and visa info, this section is designed to guide first-time visitors and returning travelers alike.
Q: What’s the best time to visit the Philippines?
A: The dry season from December to May is the best time to visit, with ideal weather for beach trips, island hopping, and mountain hikes.
I personally regard the first three months of the year (January-March) as the best period to visit the Philippines due to fewer crowds and more tolerable (sometimes chilly) daily temperatures.
If you want to experience local culture, December is also a good time to visit as the country fully gears up for the Christmas season.
April to May are the best months to pick if you plan to explore the different islands of the Philippines, as it is the peak summer season period. Just be wary that this is also the country’s summer months, so daily temperatures are usually high, and when locals flock to the beaches.
Q: Is the Philippines safe for tourists?
A: Yes, most areas are tourist-friendly. Yet ensure to stay alert in crowded places, avoid isolated areas at night, and follow local travel advisories, especially when traveling to the south of the Philippines.
Q: What are the travel entry requirements for the Philippines?
A: If you’re visiting from abroad and looking to visit the Philippines, you need to have following documents upon your arrival in the Philippines:
- A completed eTravel registration (within 72 hours before arrival)
- A passport valid for at least 6 months
- A valid visa (depending on nationality)
- A return or onward ticket
Q: What languages are spoken in the Philippines?
A: Filipino and English are the official languages. English is widely spoken, especially in cities and tourist areas.
Q: What currency is used in the Philippines?
A: The official currency is the Philippine Peso (₱). ATMs are widely available in major cities and tourist spots. Bring cash when visiting rural or remote areas.
Q: Can I use credit cards or digital payments in the Philippines?
A: Yes! Major cards like Visa and Mastercard are accepted in big establishments while cash is king for local merchants and in rural areas.
Digital payments are limited to local payment methods like GCash or Maya. Other modes of payment are not guaranteed to be available.
Q: What should I pack when visiting the Philippines?
A: Bring lightweight clothing (the Philippines can be very hot if you’re used to cold weather!), flip-flops, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, and a waterproof dry bag for island hopping.
Q: Is it safe to drink tap water in the Philippines?
A: It’s best to drink bottled or filtered water, especially in rural areas like El Nido.
Q: Any cultural etiquette I should be aware of?
A: The Philippines is still generally a conservative country, especially in its provinces, where traditions and cultural practices are observed. So dress modestly in churches and rural areas. A smile and respectful tone go a long way (locals love this!). Remove your shoes when entering someone’s home and always say “po” and “opo” when speaking to elders.
Q: Any insider tips to know for first-timers?
A: Traveling from one island to another may be costly, so I highly suggest planning and sorting your Philippines itinerary based on location and nearby destinations to maximize your stay. Booking a few months early will also help you score cheap flight tickets.
Traveling to different destinations in the Philippines may also incur additional fees, such as environmental fees and port fees. These charges help fund local improvements, so it’s best to carry cash, especially in remote destinations.
